Everyone keeps telling freshers to learn to code. We pulled more than 30,000 jobs from MNC career pages this week to check whether the coding jobs would actually hire one. They will not.
Across every open India posting in our analysed slice, 7.9% said they would take an entry-level candidate. One in thirteen. Another 19.7% did not state a level at all, which in practice means someone with five years of experience is going to eat that seat.
TL;DR
- 7.9% of open India postings are entry-level. Senior, lead and executive together take 48.4%.
- Engineering and data is 55.1% of the market and 3.3% of it is entry-level. Business, product and operations is smaller at 39.9%, and 13.9% of it is entry-level.
- Technology has the lowest fresher share of any industry, at 1.7%. The BFSI cluster runs 13.7%.
- Adobe, Salesforce, Intel and AMD posted no entry-level roles this week. Axis Bank alone accounts for 26.7% of every fresher opening in our dataset.
The biggest band is the one that will not take you
Here is the market split by career band, and how much of each band a fresher can actually apply to.
| Career band | Share of market | Entry-level share | Senior and above |
|---|
| Engineering & Data | 55.1% | 3.3% | 60.2% |
| Business, Product & Operations | 39.9% | 13.9% | 32.0% |
| Research, People & Public Impact | 4.1% | 12.8% | 47.1% |
| Design & Creative | 0.8% | 3.4% | 57.0% |
Read the first two rows together, because that is the whole issue. Engineering and data owns more than half the market and shuts the door on freshers. Business, product and operations owns less of the market and opens it four times wider.
Flip it around and it gets sharper. Of every entry-level role in our dataset, 70.1% sits in business, product and operations, and only 22.8% sits in engineering and data. The band you were told to aim at holds less than a quarter of the openings meant for you.
Design and creative is its own small tragedy. It is 0.8% of the market, which means fewer than one posting in a hundred, and 3.4% of that is entry-level. If you are a junior designer in India this quarter, you already knew.
Technology is the worst place in India to be a fresher
By industry the gap stops being a gap and becomes a wall. Consulting and professional services carried 42.2% of everything open, and the BFSI cluster another 26.3%. Technology, the sector everyone watches, sat at 12.2%.
The entry share inside each is what matters. Consulting runs 7.8% entry-level and BFSI runs 13.7%, against technology's 1.7%. A bank is roughly eight times more likely to look at you than a product technology company, and nobody is making reels about that. We saw the same shape in Issue 009 on BFSI out-hiring tech, and it has not softened since.
Company by company it is worse than the sector average suggests. Adobe, Salesforce, Intel and AMD posted no entry-level roles at all in our analysed slice. Microsoft sat at 0.8% of its own postings, Infosys at 1.2%, Google at 2.5%. Now the other side: Axis Bank ran 31.6% of its postings at entry level and Goldman Sachs 35.0%. Axis by itself holds 26.7% of every fresher opening in our dataset, and Accenture another 17.2%. Two employers most freshers never apply to are sitting on 43.9% of the openings meant for them.
The role you pick matters more than the company
Cut the same data by role family and the ranking inverts against everything a fresher is usually advised to do. Sales and marketing is 15.6% of the market and 22.4% of it is entry-level. Software engineering is 13.0% of the market and 1.4%. That is sixteen times the odds, for the role family every fresher has been trained to look down on.
Legal and compliance runs 11.7% entry, operations 11.0%, finance 8.8%. Strategy and consulting, and IT and infrastructure, both sit at 4.1%. Product management, the other role freshers chase, is 2.7%.
Data and analytics is the interesting middle at 9.1%. It sits inside the engineering and data band, so it carries the technical credibility, but it hires freshers at nearly seven times the rate of software engineering. If you want a technical first job and you want it this year, that is the door with a handle on it.
Cities follow the same pattern. Bengaluru is 35.6% of the market and 4.3% entry-level, while Mumbai is 10.9% of the market and 16.8% entry-level. Bengaluru has the jobs. Mumbai has the first jobs. That is a different reading from our metro skills map in Issue 015, where Bengaluru dominates on volume alone.

What this means for you
If you are early-career, stop optimising for the logo and start optimising for the entry share. A bank at 31.6% will read your CV; a product company at 0.8% will not open it. Apply into BFSI, consulting, sales, operations and analytics, and treat Mumbai and Noida as seriously as Bengaluru. This is not settling. It is going where 70.1% of the fresher roles actually live, and moving into engineering from inside a company is far easier than from outside one.
If you are mid-career, you are standing in the fattest part of the market. Mid-level is 23.8% of postings, and business, product and operations runs 33.3% mid. If you have been sitting still because switching feels risky, this is the widest that door gets. It narrows above you, with lead at 16.9% and executive at 7.1%.
If you are a senior, the market wants you, because senior, lead and executive together are 48.4% of everything open. What it wants is proof rather than a title. And if you are hiring for a team right now, look again at that 3.3% figure in your own band, because the fresher pipeline you are not building this year is the hiring problem you will have next year.

Methodology
Figures come from Myro Agent's work analysis of 27 July 2026: more than 30,000 India postings tracked from MNC career pages across 259 employers, of which 29,473 resolved to a career band and form the base for every percentage here. Seniority is read from the posting text, and 19.7% of postings state no level, so entry-level shares are conservative by design. Career bands and industry groups are assigned per posting and per employer, and a small share of postings are ungrouped. Coverage is India-heavy and skews towards large employers with structured career pages. Myro carries no salary data.
