For the technologist, Bengaluru is the place to grow. If you are into finance, move to Mumbai.

Our agents read 250+ MNC career pages this month and pulled close to 15,000 job openings from those career pages. Below is the data.

If you are an engineer, target Bengaluru and Hyderabad

Those two cities hold 78.8% of technology openings between them. Mumbai holds 2.9%. 19 technology employers posted Mumbai roles against 49 in Bengaluru. A Mumbai office is a satellite and a Bengaluru office is the engine.

These employers are looking for Python (356), computer science fundamentals (255), artificial intelligence (229), C++ (187), electrical engineering (135), Java (120), design verification (70), parallel computing (62).

The old evergreen languages and subjects, electrical engineering, design verification and parallel computing, belong to chip and systems work, and Bengaluru is aggressively hiring for that.

If you are in finance, then Mumbai. But if you want a job in retail banking, move to your favourite tier 2 city.

Front-office finance will always be Mumbai. Morgan Stanley posts 80% of its India roles there, and only 16% of them are technology roles. The rest is the finance floor itself. CRISIL is 59% Mumbai, Deutsche Bank 41.5%, JP Morgan 35.4%. If you want to learn how money actually moves in the banking system, there is no other place other than facing the floors (and the rains!) of Mumbai.

Mumbai is hiring for the following investment banking roles: banking products (156), mutual funds (57), risk management (55), portfolio management (46), wealth management (44), compliance requirements (43), investment banking (41).

The GCCs of the banks are hiring in Pune followed by Bengaluru. Barclays' largest India metro is Pune, and 72% of its openings carry a technical title. BNY Mellon is Pune at 67% technical. JP Morgan's largest is Bengaluru at 56%. Wells Fargo and BNY Mellon put every India role in this batch outside Mumbai.

The skills there are Python (120), regulatory compliance (109), SQL (92), Java (78), software engineering (66), Tableau (50). A bank in Bengaluru is actually a software company, because they are GCC (backend development and office work) and it hires like one.

If you are okay in retail banking, you can have a decent job in any tier 2 city. 42.4% of BFSI openings sit outside metros: 2,107 roles, more than the entire national technology total of 1,701. Those postings ask for banking products (846), customer engagement (578), loans (378), mutual funds (360), cross-selling (349) and general insurance (241).

The rest of the map

Consulting is the largest industry at 39.0% of all openings and behaves like technology: 37.4% Bengaluru, then Hyderabad at 16.6%. Manufacturing is the only row where Pune genuinely competes, at 15.6%. Consumer and retail is Mumbai's strongest row at 19.0%.

Frequently asked

Which city should I move to for a tech job in India?

Bengaluru. Technology puts 58.8% of its openings there and 20.0% in Hyderabad, so four in five technology jobs sit in two cities. Mumbai holds 2.9%. The skills those employers name most are Python, computer science fundamentals, artificial intelligence, C++ and electrical engineering, which is what chip and systems design asks for. A large share of Bengaluru's technology hiring is exactly that.

Which city should I move to for a finance career in India?

For front-office finance, yes. Morgan Stanley posts 80% of its India roles in Mumbai and only 16% of them carry a technology title. The Mumbai finance skill list is mutual funds, portfolio management, wealth management, investment banking and compliance. For bank technology the answer changes: Barclays' largest India metro is Pune and 72% of its roles are technical.

Can I build a banking career without moving to a metro?

Yes. 42.4% of BFSI openings sit outside the six big metros, which is 2,107 jobs, more than the entire national technology total. Those roles ask for banking products, sales, loans, cross-selling, general insurance and customer engagement, all of which travel to any city with a branch.

Which industry hires the most in India?

Consulting and professional services, with 5,785 of 14,851 openings (39.0%), then BFSI at 4,973 (33.5%). Technology is third at 1,701 (11.5%) despite having 60 employers on the list, more than any other industry.
